From Problem Solving to Research: Sajeeb Wins MEXT Scholarship to Study in Japan

Since the beginning of his university life, Sajeeb Kumar Ray has had a strong interest in algorithmic problem solving and programming. The process of analysing complex problems and finding effective solutions inspired him to take an interest in competitive programming. Through years of practice, he achieved the Specialist rank on Codeforces.
His experience in programming and problem solving later played an important role in his research journey. Having been involved in research since the beginning of his university life, Sajeeb is currently working on crop disease detection using computer vision technology. In particular, he focuses on making crop disease diagnosis more effective and practical through Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision.
As a result of his continued interest in research, he has already published 15 research papers. A significant part of his research focuses on combining agriculture and technology to identify crop diseases and develop technology-driven solutions to real-world agricultural problems. He believes that the analytical and problem-solving skills developed through programming also help him explore and solve new challenges in research.
Currently, Sajeeb Kumar Ray serves in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Varendra University. Alongside his academic responsibilities, he mentors students at the Varendra University Programming Club (VUPC), helping them improve their programming skills and algorithmic problem-solving abilities. He also considers sharing his experience with the next generation of students an important responsibility.
Sajeeb Kumar Ray said, “Since the beginning of my university life, I have enjoyed problem solving. I have always been fascinated by breaking down a problem, analysing it, and finding a solution. Programming made this interest even stronger. Later, through research, I also started working to solve real-world problems using technology.”
After this long academic and research journey, Sajeeb is now preparing to move to Japan for higher studies. He has been awarded the prestigious Japanese Government MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship through the University Recommendation Track.
The MEXT Scholarship is one of the most prestigious government-funded scholarship programmes for international students, administered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Through this scholarship, selected students receive opportunities to pursue higher education and research at Japanese universities. It generally covers tuition fees, a monthly stipend, and, under applicable conditions, travel expenses.
Sajeeb Kumar Ray considers receiving the MEXT Scholarship through the University Recommendation Track an important next step in his research career. He hopes to make further progress in his ongoing research on crop disease detection by taking advantage of Japan’s advanced research infrastructure and technological environment.
Sajeeb is scheduled to depart for Japan on September 24. According to him, a journey that began with problem solving gradually opened opportunities in programming, research, and ultimately higher education at the international level.

বর্তমানে সজীব কুমার রায় বরেন্দ্র বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কম্পিউটার সায়েন্স অ্যান্ড ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং (সিএসই) বিভাগে কর্মরত রয়েছেন। পাশাপাশি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রোগ্রামিং ক্লাব (ভিইউপিসি)-এর মেন্টর হিসেবে শিক্ষার্থীদের প্রোগ্রামিং ও অ্যালগরিদমিক সমস্যা সমাধানে সহযোগিতা করছেন। নিজের অর্জিত অভিজ্ঞতা নতুন প্রজন্মের শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে ছড়িয়ে দেওয়াকেও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মনে করেন তিনি।
সজীব কুমার রায় বলেন, ‘বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শুরু থেকেই আমার প্রবলেম সলভিং করতে ভালো লাগত। কোনো একটি সমস্যাকে ভেঙে বিশ্লেষণ করে তার সমাধান বের করার বিষয়টি আমাকে সবসময় আকৃষ্ট করেছে। প্রোগ্রামিংয়ের মাধ্যমে সেই আগ্রহ আরও গভীর হয়। পরবর্তীতে গবেষণায়ও আমি মূলত বাস্তব সমস্যাগুলোকে প্রযুক্তির মাধ্যমে সমাধান করার চেষ্টা করছি।’
এই দীর্ঘ একাডেমিক ও গবেষণার পথচলার পর এবার উচ্চশিক্ষার জন্য জাপানের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা করতে যাচ্ছেন সজীব। তিনি জাপান সরকারের মেক্সট (মনবুকাগাকুশো) স্কলারশিপ অর্জন করেছেন ইউনিভার্সিটি ট্র্যাক-এর মাধ্যমে।
মেক্সট স্কলারশিপ হলো জাপান সরকারের শিক্ষা, সংস্কৃতি, ক্রীড়া, বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তি মন্ত্রণালয় পরিচালিত আন্তর্জাতিক শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য অন্যতম মর্যাদাপূর্ণ সরকারি বৃত্তি। এই বৃত্তির মাধ্যমে নির্বাচিত শিক্ষার্থীরা জাপানের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে উচ্চশিক্ষা ও গবেষণার সুযোগ পান। সাধারণত এতে টিউশন ফি, মাসিক ভাতা এবং নির্দিষ্ট ক্ষেত্রে যাতায়াতসহ বিভিন্ন সুবিধা দেওয়া হয়।

আগামী ২৪ সেপ্টেম্বর জাপানের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা দেওয়ার কথা রয়েছে সজীবের। তার মতে, প্রবলেম সলভিং থেকে শুরু হওয়া যাত্রা তাকে ধীরে ধীরে প্রোগ্রামিং, গবেষণা এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে উচ্চশিক্ষার সুযোগ এনে দিয়েছে।
